After a spate of gruesome rapes and murders in Tshing, Ventersdorp, the North West government has launched a project to arm women and child-headed households with the gadget.
The gadgets are linked to different people and organisations, including the South African Police Service, for quicker response in emergency cases.

Community safety MEC Gaoage Molapisi said the device would be supported by a household community alarm.
Molapisi said the device, first of its kind in the province, produces a three-phased siren to alert the community of intrusions with the affected house being easily identifiable by a flashing red light.
It will also send alerts in the form of short text messages being sent to the cellphones of the local police stations and community crime initiatives as well as pre-selected family members, neighbours and friends.
He said the department had put systems in place to fight the rape scourge.
"We are ready; come to us we will help you start living a normal and secure life," he said.
The devise was created by Thuli Mthethwa in 2012, after her sister was attacked in Tembisa. Marketed by Memeza Shout Crime Prevention company, Mthethwa hopes to pilot it across the country.
"We have already started with the pilot in Gauteng through the permission of community safety MEC Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane, and the project is doing well at the moment," Mthethwa said. In March last year the device was distributed to disadvantaged pupils and communities around Gauteng.
She added that 10000 alarms were distributed to women and children in Diepsloot, Tembisa and Eldorado Park.
In North West, MEC Molapisi bought 600 anti-rape alarms and three household community alarms.
Mthethwa said she was working closely with the police to identify people who might need the alarms.
Molapisi said they had distributed the alarms to only three families which were identified as living under the threat.
"The intention is to pilot it across the province, we will be targeting families whose living conditions make them vulnerable."
According to the 2013/2014 North West police crime statistics report, over 3908 rape cases were reported to police in the last year, with 364 reported under the Potchefstroom cluster, which covers Ventersdorp.
The murder cases reported declined by 6%, with only 825 reported compared to the 876 reported in the last financial year.
In the same period 50 cases of murders were reported in the Potchefstroom cluster.
