CAPE TOWN - ALLEGED RHODES MEMORIAL RAPIST TO APPEAR IN WYNBERG MAGISTRATES COURT

A 35-year-old man will appear in the Wynberg Magistrate's Court in Cape Town on Monday in connection with the rape of a woman at Rhodes Memorial near the University of Cape Town (UCT).

He was arrested on Saturday morning.

Police say he can be linked to a rape which occurred in November last year.

They are trying to establish whether the man can be linked to three other cases.

Police spokesperson Andre Traut says an intelligence-driven operation in the early hours of Saturday morning led them to a hideout on the slopes of Table Mountain.

Police have been trying to catch the man for more than four months.

They reportedly used a cellphone signal to catch him.

In the latest incident, a woman was attacked while out jogging near the Rhodes Memorial last week Tuesday.

She was raped and held captive for more than 24 hours, before she managed to escape.

UCT has offered a R100 000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of all the suspects in the rape incidents.

Female students at UCT have also expressed relief at the arrest.
