KwaZulu-Natal police on Friday welcomed the sentence of life imprisonment handed down to a 19-year old man who raped a woman in front of her 10-year-old niece.
Police spokesman Major Thulani Zwane said Nhlakanipho Mlanduli was sentenced to life imprisonment on a rape charge, and 15 years for robbery in the Esikhawini Regional Court on Thursday.
“During March 2014 the accused broke into a 24 year-old-woman’s house in the rural area of Gingindlovu where he forcefully gained entry through the window in the middle of the night.”
Zwane said Mlanduli pointed a firearm at the victim and raped her while her 10-year-old niece was watching.
“He then fled the scene with some of her property.”
Gingindlovu police detectives investigated the matter which led to the quick arrest of the accused, Zwane said.
“After numerous court appearances, the accused was eventually convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment.”
