An alleged serial rapist, accused of raping his victims under the M4 bridge near the Mondi mill in south Durban, is expected to plead guilty at his next court appearance.
The 41-year-old man is facing five counts of rape and five counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances.
It is alleged he would approach his intended victims, many of whom were walking in the Merebank and Wentworth areas, and ask if they were seeking employment.
In four of the rapes, it is believed he had carried a water bottle with him and after the attacks apparently washed himself before ordering the women to do the same.
According to the charge sheet, all the women, aged between 22 and 33, were raped between January and May under the M4 bridge near the Mondi mill.
In one case, he had allegedly told a 22-year-old woman he was looking for women to work for someone at a shop in Montclair.
When she agreed to go with him, they had walked together a short distance and then he allegedly pulled out a knife and raped her.
In another case, he had allegedly asked a 24-year-old for her cellphone number, saying he would contact her if he found a job for her.
He apparently called her a few minutes later saying he did have a job and asked her to meet.
The man was arrested on Monday by the Brighton Beach Police Task Team.
He appeared briefly in the the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, wearing a green shirt and black pants.
His Legal Aid attorney had asked for an identity parade to be held before he appears again next week, when it would be expected that he plead.
