Six months after a nine-year-old girl was raped at school, no one has been charged with the crime and she still has to face her alleged abuser every day.
The girl from Mareetsane outside Mahikeng in North West was raped at a school for challenged pupils, allegedly by a 16-year-old schoolboy.

She suffers from epilepsy and has hemiplegia – which means one side of her body is paralysed.
Her mother says that after the incident in February, the school didn’t immediately inform her. “I called the school just to check how the child was doing. They gave me the runaround the next day, after they called to tell me she had been raped three days before and that I needed to accompany her to the hospital for a check-up.”
The mother, who was heavily pregnant at the time, went with a school representative to the hospital for the check-up. She said a range of blood tests were done, but were collected by the school, who now refuse to hand them over to her.
“They are my child’s results.I need to know what they say,” the mother said.
She reported the rape case to the police but still hasn’t received any assistance from them, she said.
North West police spokesman Colonel Sabata Mokgwabone said that since the incident happened, none of the children, including a witness, had received any counselling. “An appointment has been secured, and it is expected that all three children – the survivor, the suspect and the witness – will be assessed soon. No one has been arrested or charged pending assessment,” Mokgwabone said.
The mother was kept informed about the investigation and police met her almost three months ago to give her feedback, he explained.
The school has also not suspended the alleged perpetrator despite his admitting to the crime in a meeting.
