A 30-year-old man was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment by the Centane Regional Magistrate’s Court for raping a 65-year-old woman in the Eastern Cape, police said on Friday.Bongani Monco also received five years for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
Police spokesperson Captain Jackson Manatha said the incident occurred in 2014, when Monco entered the woman’s home at around midnight in the Mangweni Location, Tutura Village, Centane.
“He was armed with a knife. He repeatedly raped the 65-year-old woman in the presence of her 96-year-old husband. When the husband tried to intervene, he was stabbed on his upper body.”
Manatha said the case was then handed to the Butterworth Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) for investigation.
“The accused was linked through the DNA. Initially he pleaded not guilty, but because of the overwhelming evidence, he later pleaded guilty to both charges,” he said.
